JOHANNESBURG - The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has called for the removal of Paul Kruger's statue in Pretoria, vowing to destroy what it has described as symbols of white supremacy and apartheid.

The giant bronze statue of Paul Kruger -- the fifth president of the South African Republic or the Transvaal -- is situated in the heart of the capital city in Church Square.

'Oom Kruger' as he is affectionately known has stood tall over Church Square for six decades, attracting hundreds of visitors each day.

But it seems his future there is now uncertain.

Tshwane Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa has called for wider consultation on the Paul Kruger statue, as part of his support for calls by the ANC youth league for the statue to be relocated.

The EFF on the other hand is adamant that the statue should be removed.

Tshwane Deputy Chairperson for EFF Moafrika Mabogwana said, “We are going to destroy all the statues that represent colonial apartheids white supremacy and we've identified Paul Kruger as the first statue that we are going to destroy.”

“We are not going to wait to submit petitions and memorandum we are going to destroy that statue one way or another,” he added.

A statue doesn't make me who I am,
I regard it as a memorial of greatness,
but I don't bow down to it.

If the EFF should realise, that tearing down our statues,
cannot and will not change our being as South Africans,
it cannot and will not change our heritage and patriotism,
and cannot and will not improve who they are in their own world,


...it would be far too late to apologise or even change back to what was.

It's not about the EFF or statues pers se, Amoli...rather the selective awarding of negative status to someone's name.

For foreign viewers, the EFF is a smaller party, but the ruling party is terrified of them as they use the same cynical vote-getting techniques and don't have to make good on the wild promises they make. In this case the EFF is reacting to the ANC, and one-upping by saying they will not wait to destroy the statue...

There was a response in today's paper after Julius Malema called for the renaming of the Park a few days ago:

It also questioned the name of the Kruger Park. “The Kruger National Park as a heritage and international destination for tourism must be renamed because Kruger was a colonial racist who engineered and presided over the Boer Republic that was a foundation for apartheid systems.

“There must be no public celebration and valuation of racists who presided over the oppression and mass murder of the black majority. If South African heritage is to be given any dignity land must be redistributed and all colonial and apartheid symbols must fall,” the EFF said.
