Re: SANParks responds to imminent strikes at national parks
SKUKUZA – Officials at three Kruger National Park camps are on strike. Members of the Health and Other Service Personnel Trade Union of South Africa (HOSPERSA) have abandoned their work stations.
HOSPERSA is demanding a 9 per cent increase for their members. SANParks is offering a 6.01 per cent salary adjustment and a 1 progression.
The strike was announced by an sms that circulated among KNP residents last night. Excerpts are quoted:
“Colleagues, the negotiations (during a conciliation meeting facilitated by the CCMA) ended in a deadlock today & therefore the strike will in all likelihoof go ahead for those intent on striking – please be prepared and initiate your contingency plans as discussed…”
“Good luck colleagues, we stick together and do what must be done – please prepare all your colleagues.”
“The Orpen, Berg-en-Dal and Malelane areas are currently affected,” a source in the park told Lowvelder. This was confirmed by SANParks spokesman, Isaac Phaala.
A SANParks press release indicated that the strike is protected, but that the “no work no pay” rule will apply to those who take part in the industrial action.
According thereto, contingency plans are in place. “We do however encourage those who wish to make reservations do so via the Internet at www.sanparks.org for a speeder service”, said SANParks Head of Communications Janine Raftopoulos.
Raftopoulos added that SANParks will be monitoring the situation closely.
“The South African Police, Services (SAPS), South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and volunteers from the Working for Water have been posted at entrance gates to ensure safe passage to all those entering our parks,” she said.
“Guests travelling to any of our Parks should continue with their plans as we aim to ensure that they enjoy their stay. We are also waiting for the finalisation of picketing rules,” she concluded.

Re: SANParks responds to imminent strikes at national parks
Thanks, Rog!
Doesn't make much sense, this progress...either too few bothered to strike, or politicians stepped in!
Times are a-changing, I tells ya!

Was in the Park today, no problems!
Generally dim views regarding strike, as agreement reached and concession by SP? Not sure!

SANParks strike continues

Johannesburg - SANParks staff will continue their strike after rejecting the employer's wage increase offer, a trade union official said on Wednesday.
"We presented the new offer to our members and it was overwhelmingly rejected," Health and Other Service Personnel Trade Union of South Africa (Hospersa) general secretary Noel Desfontaines said.
Hospersa-affiliated workers initially asked for a 9% wage increase for 2018. SANParks' first offer was 6%.
On Tuesday July 25, it offered a 6.1% salary increase and a 1% salary progression for qualifying employees, Hospersa spokesperson Kevin Halama said at the time.
"As a compromise, our members are willing to settle for a 7.5 % salary increase for all employees," Desfontaines said.
He said the strike would continue until they got what they wanted.
SANParks manages all 19 of the country's national parks. Tourists can still visit them, but can expect booking or gate delays. Other services like bush walks might also not be on offer.
On Monday, SANParks said it would delay taking bookings for 2018 by a week, until August 1, due to the strike.
