Avis take a large deposit in excess of R20K which is put on a credit card. Most UK card companies make a non-sterling transaction fee in the region of 2.5%. Does anyone know if this transaction fee is applied to the deposit because that will be almost as much as the car hire cost?

I don't think that they actually withdraw the money. They keep the credit card details as security IF something should happen to the car. Not sure though

for me it was like that (Europacar) and use it to full up at the airport, when I come back

Thanks Lisbeth and nan. I'd like to book with Avis if possible because they have office at Skukuza in case I need help. But if Europcar definitely don't bank the money, then I'll go with them.
