Avis take a large deposit in excess of R20K which is put on a credit card. Most UK card companies make a non-sterling transaction fee in the region of 2.5%. Does anyone know if this transaction fee is applied to the deposit because that will be almost as much as the car hire cost?

I don't think that they actually withdraw the money. They keep the credit card details as security IF something should happen to the car. Not sure though -O-

for me it was like that (Europacar) and use it to full up at the airport, when I come back \O

Thanks Lisbeth and nan. I'd like to book with Avis if possible because they have office at Skukuza in case I need help. But if Europcar definitely don't bank the money, then I'll go with them.
