Re: JUNE IS BUSTING OUT ALL OVER
Lets go back to yesterday at Nshawu No. 3. When we arrived there, there were already about 6 cars parked in the small parking area and parked at all sorts of angles. All big SUV's as well. We pulled up next to one of them and the driver pointed forward and down into a small hollow but we could not see anything. Sitting in our little sedan had its drawbacks. Then an eagle popped up with a piece of meat in its beak. Now we knew that there was a kill in the hollow but we could not see it.
We waited in the hope that one or more SUV's would leave. All the while the eagle popped up and down out of the dip each time with some meat in its beak. There were also some hyena and jackal hanging around. At one point we saw a hyena walk away with quite a big chunk of meat in its mouth. When it became apparent that no one was going to leave eventually gave up and left. We were puzzled as to what animal had made the kill. We would come back early tomorrow morning.

07 June 2018 - Part 1/2.
We went back to Nshawu No 3 and to our surprise there were no cars to be seen , so we parked next to the hollow and found the source to our frustration of yesterday.
No raptors to be seen. Only a few hyena skulking about. Just look at the size of its stomach.
We still had no clue as to what killed the little zebra but assumed it might have been the hyena's.
At this point another car arrived and the gent asked if we had seen the leopard in a tree a couple of km's further along the S50 close to the intersection with the S143. We thanked him and made our way to see if we could find it. On the way a game drive truck stopped us and told us about the leopard in the tree. So we trundled on.
More of this later. We now move to our afternoon drive.
A tawny eagle in a tree.
Seen from the viewing deck at Mopani.
Joan giving her favourite tree, the baobab in Mopani Camp, a big hug.
I will just give it a gentle touch.

Re: JUNE IS BUSTING OUT ALL OVER
Smashing pics and storytelling again, stf!
Ja, hyena are quite capable of killing their own antelope, some say they are more hunters than scavengers!
Love the scenic shots, and that Shawu valley looks like East Africa!

Re: JUNE IS BUSTING OUT ALL OVER
Joan and I discussed the possibility of hyena actually making a kill and you have just confirmed.
Thank you for the compliments.
He could hardly walk he was so full.
Ah, the leopard in the tree - lets wait and see.
Yes Lisbeth there is something special about waterbucks.
Thanks for the comments Pumbaa.
We must admit that the area is different to down south.

Re: JUNE IS BUSTING OUT ALL OVER
07 June 2018 - Part 2/2
We drove along the s50 for what seemed an eternity. This area is not really condusive to leopard type trees.
Eventually we saw two SUV;s parked on the side of the road. As we approached slowly there was this one tree that looked totally out of place.
We scanned the tree but could not see the leopard. Just our luck. It had most probably jumped out and gone off.
The driver of one of the SUV';s called us over and told us that the leopard was at the base of the tree in the grass. He could just about see it but we had no chance in our little sedan. He told us to watch to the left of the base as every now and again he would swish his tail. This was the only sign that he was still around. Any way, we found a position between the two SUV's but still saw nothing.
After a while one of the SUV;s drove off so we moved into his position which now gave us a bit more height.
A few more minutes went by and the guy that told us about the leopard called it a day and drove off.
After a few minutes we saw the swish of a tail and suddenly felt very elated. He was still here. We both agreed that we would sit this one out.
We must have arrived at the spot at about 12 noon. At 12:35 we suddenly saw his head appear and he look up the tree. Joan got her camera out and the following pics are the sequence. He did not look very comfortable in the tree so we decided to sit it out as we were sure he would not stay there too long or go to sleep.
And then at 13:00 he made his down and out of the tree.
With a beautiful dive into the grass.
What really surprised us is that, during the time he was in the tree, was the number of cars that drove past without even slowing down.
