Grootvlei Dam

On the S50 , quite a long drive from Shingwedzi, is the rather large Grootvlei Dam. This is normally a quiet spot to spend some time, as their is normally not very much traffic around here, because of the distance of this road.

Elephants and buffalo favour this dam, and impala, kudu and zebra also stop by regularly for a drink.

Fish eagles, African jacana, grey heron and reed cormorants are among the birds that can be spotted here.

The Shibavatsengele lookout point is 8 km from this dam.

Grootvlei Dam ..now it is full of water ..In Sept 2018 it was a lion playground...basically empty and a Buffalo Magnet...hence this big and hairy presence

Gorge Camp

A tiny old restcamp that is long gone, near the confluence of the Letaba and Olifants rivers. It was there before Olifants Camp, around the 1930s, sort of an outpost for use by Letaba and Satara rangers, and an Eastern Boundary picket. It was eventually discarded as a public camp because of its remoteness. There is virtually nothing left there now!

Gabeni Waterhole

At the junction of the S128, S29 and S30.

Ganspan

Waterhole in the Dzombo stream near Dipene. Afrikaans for a flat, small lake (pan) which is frequented by geese. The largest and most frequently seen goose in the KNP would be the “Kolgans” or Egyptian goose Alopochen aegyptiacus.

Dr U de V Pienaar hoped that this goose would settle here and named the pan “Ganspan” in 1974.

Grysbok Waterhole

Grysbok waterhole is on the H1-6, close to Mopanie. One of the rare antelope that might be found here is Sharpe's Grysbok, after which the waterhole was named.

Sharpe's is one Kruger's smallest antelopes and is extremely shy. It feeds mostly at night but does emerge in daylight when the weather is overcast. It is only found in the northern parts of Kruger.

General Ben Viljoen's Attack Site, S25

On 16 September, 1900, at the height of the 2nd Anglo Boer War, General Ben Viljoen destroyed his artillery and ammunition to prevent them from falling to the approaching Bristish army under General Pole-Carew

Gayisenga

Pool and lookout on the Bume stream (S-108).

The Tsonga word means “the maker of bangles”, of the type that would be worn around both the arms as well as the legs. A mine worker who lived there, returned from working on the mines. His name was Gayisa and he learnt to make senga, which are bangles made from copper and cowtail hair.

West of the S37, south of the Sweni River.

Gardenia Hide

Located on the S119 north east of Malelane, and so named because of the array of gardenia trees in the area which flower (yellow and creamy white blossoms) profusely in spring.
