The rats went to the shop and came roaring back to inform us that they had met RP (and I only later found out that he had given them each something. Thanks RP, you made their trip)

Ja, you guys don't give them any booze! @#$

That leopard cub is an astounding sighting, all alone. Another "pic of the year!"

The kids' pics are much better...who must get the award? -O-

Thanks very much for putting up with me, and for the Rats making me a fourth face! :o0ps: It was absolutely wonderful, and yes, I wobbled straight to bed, no problem! =O:
No booze until they are 18  but seriously, thanks for what you did \O

The Cow took the "nominated" close up pic and Hawkeyes the other close up pic \O

Ja, the Cow and I were in a mood with the car when you arrived 0: however your chirps soon changed that =O:

It's always great meeting up X#X

I'm surprised you found your unit as Satara can be confusing in the dark, especially with no torch

Pumbaa wrote:Still incredible sightings, Bushcraft,

awesome cheetah shots and even wild Dogs as well - You had in fact quite a lot of stunning ones :-0

Plus birds and rhinos X#X :ty:
Thanks Pumbaa \O This was our 5th April trip and we found it a battle for sightings 0: One hits a luck with a few good sightings, but the general game viewing was difficult due to the long grass, so it felt like a mission :-? I prefer July to November, but can't always get in during school holidays O/ hence my drive for a more functional method of securing accommodation as I could book my 2020 trip now 0*\

12th Biyamiti to Skukuza

The previous day had been “long” so we didn’t rush our morning and first took a stroll around camp and down to the fence before heading out at around 6:30am.

The hyenas had been howling the previous evening and even though we were later than normal, the odd one was still hanging around.

Image

We were cruising down the S25 casually chatting when Albert, who sits in the middle on the back seat, suddenly shrieked “WILD DOGS!” which got the Cow and I throwing cameras around again.

The pack was heading straight for us, so I pulled over and switched off, but they then ran into the bush, so we just waited and minutes later they returned to the road, but closer to us and continued on towards us.

The dogs ran past us on both sides of the car, which got me howling about my 500mm lens as I couldn’t take pics and the Cow and rats also stuffed up with their point and shoot cameras as they all forgot to change to “TV mode” for fast moving subjects and I have given up trying to explain the way different modes work on their cameras, not that I understand how to use them properly either, so their pics were all blurred.

I tried to turn and follow the dogs, but 2 other cars had pulled in behind me, hence I had to wait for them to turn first and we ended up behind both of them.

The guy in the front was either afraid of the dogs or he wanted to give them major space, because he was following them, but he was staying 50m behind them, therefore we could only get a fairly far view of the dogs in the distance.

I was starting to lose it with the driver in front when the dogs took off after something into the bush, so we all switched off and waited however after 5 minutes my patience collapsed and we continued on towards the S108/S25 intersection.

The short piece of the S108, the H5 and the section of the H4-2 to the H4-1/S21 intersection only produced the normal clan, so we stopped a few times, but never took many pics.

There’s a little “no name” seasonal pond 5km down the S21 off the H4-1 which we like to check out each trip, so after a conference we decided to check it out. (I know leachy has got a leopard there before. Lol)

On the way to the “pond” we found an ellie in the road and then something we hadn’t seen before

Image

The Cow started pointing and then said “There’s a vulture’s nest”, so I continued slowly on, but then I spotted a long legged thing coming in to land and hit the brakes.

“It’s a SBS’s nest”

We had never seen a SBS feeding its juniors before, so this was something different for us, therefore we parked off for 10 minutes and watched.

I was fascinated, but about something different to the rest of the clan

“Those juniors are ugly things when compared to the adults”

This upset the Cow

“SHAME!”

The little seasonal pond didn’t produce “Leachy’s leopard” and it had been taken over by hippos, which will have to move in a few months, so we didn’t hang around long before heading back to the H4-1 and up towards Skukuza.

Image

We only stopped for pics again when we were just outside Skukuza as a zebra was hanging its teeth out next to the road and some lion were sleeping in riverbed in the distance.

Very nice sighting of the dogs ^Q^ ^Q^
And the SBS nest is cool too. I agree, the youngsters are a bit ugly

That section up the H4-1 from Lower Sabie to Skukuza was tough on sightings for us this time. Probably the density of the bush after all the rain, plus animals spreading out more. At least you got some distant lions \O

By my reckoning this is now a good 48 hours since your previous leopard. There must be one waiting for you around the corner -O-

Yes, the dogs were a nice surprise \O We have seen SBS's on nests before, but never one feeding its juniors, so we found it cool.

I think you are correct on the H4-1. If I look at our 5 April trips the H4-1 doesn't produce like it does from July to November (obviously a water thing also) and in April 2014 we chatted to the Lower Sabie ranger staff and they informed us that they only start using it for sunset drives from around June, so we only drove it out of necessity to get from point A to point B this trip \O

How did you guess about the leopard stress  =O: =O: Ja, the pressure was mounting as the previous day we didn't find leopard and I need at least 1 per day while in KNP for peace in our household 0- There's something around the corner ;-)

Always great to find wild dogs \O and nice SBS sighting.

The H4-1 actually produced two of our best sightings this trip, but then you guys saw lots around Satara, so it's all luck of the draw! lol -O-

Ja, we did have wild dogs take out an impala and then a leopard pull in and try and steal it during one of our April trips on the H4-1, so those lucks are always around, but generally it doesn't operate as well as it does in the winter months when other water dries up :-?

What did you guys find on it :-0 I'm curious now O\/

=O: =O: It wasn't one of our better trips sighting wise generally 0: (leopard and lion =O: )

I'm no expert on dogs, but they are always around and mobile in April and one has to be unlucky not to find them. We found 4 different packs this trip without specifically looking in their areas, but have had up to 7 pack sightings during a 9 day April trip. In the winter months we find that one has to be lucky to find them as they seem to den around June/July/August. (Unless they den close to the road) Towards the end of August and into September/October one can find them with juniors O\/

Your baby boet  My TT hasn't made it to page 25 yet =O:

Thanks for popping in and commenting X#X
