Glad you are happy lol How on earth did you know the genus? :-?

I have put the Dorylus here, ExFmem, you can go and edit, add etc
https://africawild-forum.com/viewtopic.p ... 50#p246271

And for the other fly I still have no clue -O-

Thanks for doing the Dorylus :-)

This from Picker re Gonia: Fairly large, stout and bristly, with abdomen reddish brown…Yellowish white hairs on cheeks of both species in the genus… I then looked for Gonia pics at Diptera.info. and they were very similar overall, but the wing venation matched, at least to me, so I was pretty confident it was a Gonia sp.

I can't find anything on G. rubiventris specifically :-( , so probably not too wise to just assume it is that one just based on the fact Picker says there are 2 species in South Africa, and it's not bimaculata, as there are plenty pics of that species.

What do you think? -O- Should I enter as "possible", "probable", or just Gonia sp.?

Thanks, once again.

Just got the answer on this one from Diptera.info:

Therevidae? Wing veins are right, antenna lacks a conspicuous stylus, and some African species have banded wings.

Yes it is a Therevidae, genus Orthactia. It is a genus endemic in southern Africa (Namibia and South Africa) known from 7 species (all described by Leif Lyneborg. This is a female, males are holoptic... very nice picture!

^Q^ ^Q^ ^Q^ O\/ O\/

I'm assuming this is a fly due to the mouthparts, but it resembles a wasp otherwise. :-? Can someone point me in the right direction please?

As per the second reply to my inquiry:
"Yes it is a Therevidae, genus Orthactia. It is a genus endemic in southern Africa (Namibia and South Africa) known from 7 species (all described by Leif Lyneborg. This is a female, males are holoptic."

I'm going with Orthactia, as there are only 7 species:(Here's what I have so far)

Orthactia albopilosa - South Africa
State or province Northern Cape
County Upington

Orthactia deserticola - other notable examples of flies restricted to the hyper-arid region of Namibia include Orthactia deserticola Lyneborg in the Therevidae (M. hauser, pers. comm.),
Orthactia fascipennis - State or province: Cape Province
Orthactia gobabebensis - State or province: Western Cape
Orthactia irwini - State or province: Cape
Orthactia londti (no info. yet)
Orthactia penicillata - State or province: Northern Cape, but the pic doesn't match, so can rule that one out -O-
(pic:

Also, the more I read about Tachinidae, the more I questioned my ID on the Gonia sp.. Just got a reply from Diptera.info that it is Genus Linnaemya, so glad I held off writing that one up. You were correct, as usual, to question how I came up with Gonia. 0/0 More later.... X#X
