Friday 30 October 2020

No trip to the Kgalagadi is complete without a quiet spell or two.
Well we started a quiet spell at the end of October, and those animals which we did see, were intent on social distancing as required by the new regulations

We were awakened to the sound of lions roaring, and were up and out of the gate at the first opportunity.
Unfortunately we didn’t find the lions and had a relatively quiet drive down to Kamqua.

These giraffe at 14th borehole providing the only real sighting of the morning .

After stopping briefly at the picnic spot we carried on south.
Just after Kamqua this male lion was parked off on the far side of the riverbed.

We waited a while, watching him contemplate his naval before carrying on.

Further south, near Montrose, this mother cheetah and her two cubs entertained us and quite a few others, but unfortunately also very far away.
They were a bit too far away for our cameras, so we spent most of the sighting watching them play through our binoculars. We spent at least two hours with them before turning around

Sorry the pics are quite heavily cropped

It was special to see the cubs.

The bee eaters were out and about near Kamqua

Once back in camp at Mata Mata, we spent the rest of the day relaxing at the pool and around camp.

This Southern White faced owl was a common visitor to the campsite, and was out and about that evening

We ended the day braaing under the full moon.

A pity that the cheetahs were so far away :-(

The giraffes are always to be found around there. I wonder if they are ever on the Nossob side -O-

Apologies for the delay in posting again, and thanks for all the kind comments. \O

Saturday 31 October 2020

The last day of October was spent driving down from Mata Mat to Auchterlonie and back.
It turned out to be very much a birding day besides sightings of giraffe again on our way down

And a flat lion, social distancing at Montrose
