The last one is not a fig, but if you like an Indian fig and commonly called a prickly pear ;-)

Afrikaans name for prickly pear is : Turksvy - directly translated Turkish Fig .
Very very nice to eat the fruit , make jam , and , leaves ( those hairy prickly flat things ) , peeled , cut into squares , boiled and cooked in sugar syrup makes a delicious preserve same as melon preserve :O^
thank you Liz

and thank you too Okie for these explanation

I also found something.... in French :
Le Figuier de Barbarie (Opuntia ficus-indica) est une espèce de plante de la famille des Cactaceae, originaire du Mexique, qui s'est naturalisée dans d'autres continents, notamment le pourtour méditerranéen et en Afrique du Sud et Afrique du Nord. Il produit un fruit comestible appelé figue de Barbarie.Wikipédia

The dried one is an important nourishment in the Arab countries and is exported all over the planet, as far as I now.Image

You can find the dark ones and the green ones (which are the best) Image. The difficult thing is to find the ripe ones at the right moment O**

Ja, nana, our Prickly Pears or Turksvy come from America..an invader but a slow one! lol

Lordy...all those birds in the desert, surely fish eagles can't be there naturally?

The attention to details is lovely and refreshing, as always! 0/0 :ty:

Okie, are you saying our commercial melon jam may be turksvy? No matter, my favourite! O\/

Whaha...Michele begins her posts with "so"... =O:

No , what I said is that prickly pear , leaves , cut and pealed and cooked in syrup is just like melon preserve .
And figs are of course figs , all over the world -- I just love them , have a few trees , and make a lot of fig jam every year .
Sometimes , I even buy in a few crates , say about 50 kilograms , and make jam from it \O
Make a green fig preserve too , from figs that are not ripe yet , in a thick syrup . Enjoy it with cheese and biscuits ...

I make melon preserve too . Currently have a big one , about 20 kg , awaiting for me to make into preserve ..... when I have the time 0*\
