Injayamtepe

On the Sabie river road there used to be a memorable site called Injayamtepe (named after a watercourse Inja kaMthephe, which is a tributary to the Sabie river, approximately 5 kilometres west of Skukuza. Unfortunately this site or river is not listed on the latest maps anymore. It means “the dog of Mthephe”, the name the Swazi people gave to Ranger Healy. Healy sent a Swazi Ranger to fetch a greyhound from Ranger Wolhuter at Matimba. On the way back to Skukuza, the dog died of pure exhaustion and the extreme heat of the day, and was buried there.
What makes it memorable, is that Healy routed out the Black helpers from the compound at Skukuza and drove them to weep and lament at the death of the dog!
A fine block of granite was erected on which Healy had the words neatly carved: “Erected by G. R. Healy in loving memory of Mary, aged 3 years”, followed by the date.
Some of the older rangers might still be able to remember and show tourists where the tombstone is.
(Please bear in mind that this is not on a tourist route anymore, and that it might not be allowed to view it.)

In his book ‘South African Eden’ Stevenson-Hamilton remembers how he often heard tourists, after looking at the stone, remark on how wrong it was to bring your children to the Lowveld!

JAKKALSBESSIE PRIVATE CAMP

Situated within the Kruger National Park, Jakkalsbessie private camp is located a mere 8km from Skukuza and 2km from the Airport. Due to its close proximity to Skukuza, guests to Jakkalsbessie can have all the advantages of being close to the main restcamp, yet enjoy the peace and tranquility in the seclusion of the bush. Accommodation tends to be more luxurious, with a fully furbished kitchen in all of our two-bedroomed accommodation units. Bush walks, a game of golf on our unprotected 9-hole golf course, bush braais and drives, catering and spousal programmes can be arranged with prior notification to the restcamp manager. Collection from the airport for conference delegates can also be arranged.

Jock's Birthplace

Just off the H2-2 near Pretoriuskop is the site of Jock's birthplace.

The book “Jock of the Bushveld” was written by Sir Percy Fitzpatrick in 1905, for his young children, and tells the story of his dog “Jock” and their adventures in South Africa some 20 years before.

Jock was born in the present day Kruger National Park near the Pretoriuskop Restcamp. He was the runt of the litter and the young Fitzpatrick saved him from certain death by adopting him as a pup. Jock grew up to be a faithful and obedient companion, as well as a champion fighter and hunter. Jock accompanied Fitzpatrick on his journeys through the KNP, as well as through the towns of Sabie, Graskop, Pilgrim’s Rest, Barberton and Lydenburg.

Percy Fitzpatrick became a transport rider – carting supplies for the goldfields at Pilgrim’s Rest and Barberton from Delagoa Bay (now Maputo) in Lourenco Marques (now Mozambique).

Jozikuhlu

Spruit crossing the Voortrekker Road west of Voortrekker windmill.

Josekhulu was named after Albasini's induna, or headman, a large Zulu man known as "Big Josef" who was in charge of the area. Close to Josekhulu is the site of a trading store set up by Thomas Hart during the 1870s to sell supplies to the porters who used to carry supplies from the coast to Pretoriuskop.

Jones' Dam/ Jones' se Dam

Situated to the west of the S36 road, ±2km's from the turn-off on the main H1-2 tar road, halfway between Skukuza camp and Tshokwane picnic site.

This dam was named by J.J. Kloppers after a former senior ranger, Colonel Rowland-Jones, who helped build this dam.

Jumbo Waterhole

Named by ranger Bruce Bryden, this borehole was sunk in 1975 and refers to the name given by the English for elephant, after having an encounter with a pachyderm whilst sinking the hole.

Jock Windmill

Defunct waterpoint within sight of Afsaal picnic spot on the lower H2-2.





Named after Jock of the Bushveld, the legendary trail dog in Percy Fitzpatrick's book.
