Ok guys, let me carry on with Day 4...
Again, we were up nice and early and out of the gates at 05:54. He got onto the H1-3 where the first animals of the day began to make their appearance. We had planned to do the S100, and then onto the H6 as that had also been a good road lately. The S100 produced the normal stuff, and then suddenly we saw something in the road...
HONEY BADGER!!! He looked at us, and then ran off into the bush where we could just see his white back running off into the distance.
So, no pic unfortunately, but at least we can say that we have finally seen a honey badger in the wild in Kruger!
We carried on down the road, and saw two side-striped Jackals in the road. They ran off before we could get pics, so again no photographic evidence. These were the first and only Jackals of the trip, sadly, but lucky enough they were side-striped ones.
No more action happened until we reached the H6, where game was plentiful. And mom even had a lifer, a Namaqua Dove!
As we were driving, mom suddenly said stop. She said that she had seen something running up a path next to the road. So we reversed but couldn't see anything. I had noticed a car stopped ahead and suggested that we go see what he could see. As we got there he excitedly said, "Vyf jagluiperd!" "Where?!" "They are quite deep in, but they just killed impala right here about a minute ago!" WHATT!!! WE MISSED A CHEETAH KILL BY A MINUTE!
We eventually spotted them very far away, and we could immediately see the blood on their face. We sat with them while they ate but I didn't bother to get any pics as they were too far away, but the video picked them up nicely. It was then that we realised that the 'thing' mom had seen running away from the road, was one of the last cheetahs, of the 5.
They ate very quickly because the vultures had already begun congregating. It was as if we had just arrived at an airport! As soon as they were done eating they got up and began to walk parallel to the road. They would walk a couple meters and then rest and then walk. Finally they started walking through a very open area where I could snap some shots.
Not good pics at all, but you can at least see them.
After that they sat down, and didn't get up again, so we moved off.

Thanks ( to be truthful, that wasn't a boerewors, it was a fatwors, the amount of flame it produced. )

Our only cheetah sighting this trip nan, so it was great!
It was our best morning in the park, and the S100 finally showed us something!Tina wrote:what a great drive

Badger and side striped on the S100
Just missed the cheetah kill, but still awesome to find them (We drove a portion of the H6 twice trying to find them a few days later and failed big time )
Fantastic morning drive so far

If I hadn't told my dad to stop for whatever I saw, we would have seen the kill.
And it's not over yet.Bushcraft wrote:Fantastic morning drive so far

OK so, honey badger and SSJ's on the S100...a good start to the morning. We thought we'd see the mating lions again, but they had moved off.
Some birdies on the S41... a Three-banded Plover..
...and another lifer...a Namaqua Dove!
Then it was onto the H6 which hasn't been too good for us recently, but we were seeing a lot of game.
Twins and a friend.
As the Brat explained I saw something running up a private road but when we reversed it was gone. In the meantime there was a vehicle stopped ahead and they were busy watching 5 cheetah chase and kill an impala...just shows how minutes can make such a difference!
The cheetah were deep into the bush so these pics are heavily cropped.
It was amazing to see how quickly they ate, and how quickly the vultures arrived!
Lappet-faced Vulture
The cheetah finished eating in about 45 mins and as soon as they left the kill the vultures took over. We were hoping they'd walk towards us, but unfortunately they didn't.
We also didn't manage to get all 5 in one pic.
All in all we were there for about 2 hours and eventually they disappeared, so we moved on...what a fantastic sighting. We were planning on going back to camp via the Sweni Road, but then decided we'd first head down to Kumana....
