The snared trunk bits normally drop off, eventually...it is terrible, as most of the ellie's nerves are right there, and the trunk has to be used continuously.
Have seen them take food "offered" from other ellies, not a problem, and they adapt reasonably well, walking into the river to drink via the mouth, and feed so too. They are very clever indeed!
