Thanks Dewi and Flutterby for your positive comments. The above pictures were taken on a manual setting. After reading the photography lessons thread I am now going to put the camera on to TV setting and see what happens.

Well done STF and you chose a difficult bird to practise on . :) I tend to use AV mode for Birds in Flight and if captured against a bright sky I tend to overexpose.....but there are many recipes for a great BIF....:) Be warned..I think BIF photography gets a bit addictive...:)

STF

As Michele says go AV as the light changers when panning the depth of field will stay shallow and your speed does increase depending on the light. I shoot all bird in flight on AV .Don't get addicted =O: =O: =O: =O:

Thanks very much for the advice PRWIN but as mentioned above it is far too late - I am totally hooked. I tried using TV - the one setting with the man running - this morning and am waiting to see how they come out.

Hi PRWIN. At the beginning of this thread you asked for contributions. Well you asked for it so here are some of my photos of garden birds in flight using a Nikon D90 on manual setting using a tripod.

Well done STF..you are indeed hooked...the garden birds are going to have no peace.....:)
I will try and upload some of my pics from my cruise this evening...It was indeed a new challenge to try and focus on a bird from a boat that was speeding along as well as rocking from side to side...:)
