Identification
Size: 19 cm
Sexes alike. Overall dark appearance (especially above), heavily streaked underparts, short stout beak. Flight undulating and underwings all dark.
Juvenile: Duller than ad, and breast buffier.

Juvenile: Like adult, duller brown above.

35 cm. Smallest duck in region. Blue-grey bill, dark crown and small size diagnostic. In flight, trailing edge to secondaries white.
Juvenile: Duller, plainer above and less spotted below.

23 cm (25 cm incl streamers); sexes alike. Combination of yellow throat, black gorget, turquoise underparts and brown and yellow back unmistakable.
Juvenile: Lacks tail streamers, gorget less distinct and overall duller and greener.

39 cm; sexes alike. Long wings, spotted upperparts, grey crest and pale underparts distinctive. Gives itself away by loud call. Juvenile: Crown blackish, spots on upperparts buffish.

Identification
58 cm; sexes alike, females considerably larger than males. Relatively small eagle with colour variations from pale, intermediate (most common) to dark. Distinctive features include small face, dark eyes and dark patch in front of eye, small crest (not always visible), baggy leggings and long narrow tail. In flight, long narrow ruler-like (square-tipped) tail and long square-ended wings (also ruler-like) easily distinguish it from other ‘brown’ raptors. Juvenile: Like respective ad, but with pale fringes to feathers on upperparts.
