Striped mouse , or four striped mouse are both general names . Afrikaans : streep-muis , or : veldmuis .
They are very widespread . Lots here on the farm . Interestingly , they may come into a building , shed , or house , looking for food , but they never take up residence inside - always somewhere outside , where you quite often see them foraging amongst leaves , grass , etc .

Incidently , this was originally ID'd by Dewi as a Pouched mouse - Saccostomus campestris .
Correctly , it is rather a Bushveld gerbil - Gerbillis leucogastres -- which is a good description of its appearance - white belly .
Afrikaans - Bosveld nagmuis .

When I moved into my hovel 20 years ago it had just been built in the bush, so to speak, and one of these stripemouse guys pilfered my meager possessions for weeks!
I got him with a trap eventually, but not after having hurt my fingers badly...
