Residents are living in fear after a pride of lions escaped from the park.
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife is continuing with its search for the lions that escaped from the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park last week.

As of Wednesday morning it was unclear how many lions were outside the reserve.

According to the mayor of Ulundi Municipality, Wilson Ntshangase, there were reports of lions that were spotted crossing the R66 road, near Intibane Lodge, on Tuesday.

Ntshangase has since warned residents to refrain from walking and jogging towards Ulundi 19 to until these lions are captured.

He said a search for these lions was conducted on Tuesday using a chopper but they were not found. However, tracks were found inside Intibane Lodge and Sweet Home Bush Camp, which is near Ulundi 19.

Ntshangase said upon search, a carcass of cow was also discovered and it was suspected it had been killed by the lions.

“The meat was still fresh and according to the experts. It looks like it was bitten during the night or early in the morning. Search will continue using the trained dogs,” said Ntshangase.

He said also called upon councillors for wards near where the lions were spotted to inform residents. He said dangerous wild animals escaping the park to areas where people live is not a good thing.

“We hope Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife will find these lions. I sympathise with all the families that are affected by this, who’ve lost their family members, livestock and other valuable things. I urge residents to be extra careful during this time,” said Ntshangase.

Ezemvelo spokesperson, Musa Mntambo, said they could not confirm how many lions were out of the park.

“We are still searching for them. We however don’t think the cow that the mayor says was killed by the lions was indeed killed by the lions because of how it was eaten. We suspect it might have been a hyena,” said Mntambo.

Meeting to discuss lion attacks

The KwaZulu-Natal’s Conservation and Environment Affairs Portfolio Committee is set to hold meeting and a press briefing to address the issue of lion attacks on communities.

The meeting will be at the KZN Sharks Board offices, in uMhlanga, on Saturday morning.

Other stakeholders invited to be part of the meeting include the traditional authorities of Ukhukho and Mlaba, the management of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife as well as community representatives who had petitioned the KZN Legislature on this matter.

No doubt they will track and shoot these as well . KZN parks should be shutdown and animals transferred to Sanparks for their own safety ... O**

Lions on the loose in Mpumalanga recaptured and returned to Kruger National Park

  • Three lions have been recaptured next to Sabie Sand Nature Reserve in Mpumalanga and taken to the Kruger National Park.
  • They were located on Monday ending a three-day-long search that began on Friday after the first report came out.
  • It is not yet clear where the lions escaped from, however, Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency believe they are from Kruger.

Three lions, which have been on the loose in Mpumalanga since last week, have been recaptured near the Sabie Sand Nature Reserve and taken to the Kruger National Park.

This was confirmed by Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency manager Louw Steyn on Monday afternoon, concluding a three-day-long search for the wild cats that began on Friday.

Louw said the first official report of the lions being on the loose came on Friday prompting the agency's search.

He added the search was complicated over the weekend as the heavy rainfall affected visibility.

However, the searchers continued their work on Monday, yielding results on the same day.

Louw said residents aided the searchers by reporting on the lions' tracks.

The three lions were eventually found in the thick bush near Sabi Sand, he added.

"It's impossible to know where they escaped from, but they are definitely from Kruger Park."

Kruger National Park spokesperson Ike Phaahla told News24 prior to the discovery they were also involved in the search.

While they do not know where the three lions escaped from, Phaahla said: "Yesterday [Sunday], we looked for them the whole day, and there was no sighting of them, but people could hear them roaring at night. They are not mobile during the day."

Friends Of Wildlife Management

The Wildlife Management Team was alerted to multiple reports of lions in Marloth Park, including these two males. 🦁
On Friday the 25th of November, a combined operation between MTPA, Wildlifevets.com , Nkomazi Municipal Rangers, the Carnivore Team, members of CPF and Security personell was undertaken to capture and relocate these two males.
The two lions were successfully darted, microchipped and loaded into transport crates. The pair was then driven to the bomas in Skukuza for temporary holding and TB testing.
With the test results being satisfactory, the younger of the two males was fitted with a GPS tracking Collar, to monitor their Movements.
The pair are currently in transit for release in the far north of the Kruger Park, where the lion density is low.
A special thanks to African Wildlife Vets for the donation of the predator blindfolds and stretchers to MTPA.❤
