Not strictly true, the definition of a macro photography is "photography producing photographs of small items larger than life size", so a good telephoto can yield good results : the following images were taken with a Nikon D500 with Nikkor 200-500mm lens.
A Potter Wasp (Delta lepeleterii).
A Bee Wolf with Honey Bee prey.
That's why I haven't done much macro photography lately.

I will definitely try again, but I will need a tripod for more stability...
