A new generation of superb tuskers is developing in TEMBE - here are three of them as they appeared on TEMBE's webcam earlier today :-

Yes RP, you are right, none of the TEMBE bulls have the "tank-like" look so often seen amongst the KNP bulls - they look like all have distinctly long legs.
Also notable is the lip line height at the tusks relative to the body dimensions.

KNP elephants are more or less average in height - Tembe, northern Botswana ( Khaudom NP to Chobe/Hwange ) and Kaokoland are known for their tall elephants and Selous/Mikumi is known to have the smallest savannah elephants. The natural population of Addo seems slightly smaller than KNP although some people who did field work in Addo disagree with this.

The tallest elephant on record was hunted in Angola not too far north of the Okavango river and I suspect that would make him a member of the northern Botswana population.

Gerrie.

Tembe elephants bull are less masive maybe, have smaller heads, but the old bulls are as tall as the large Kruger bulls. Isilo did not look massive but had a shoulder height taller than 3.4 m.
The upcoming tuskers are not as tall, lots of them only 4 or 40 years old and will grow taller.

Different shape yes, but not less tall :-)

Kruger and Tembe ellies all came from Moz, theoretically!

However, the Southern Coastal Moz/Maputo bunch may have been isolated for quite a while, and a bit different?

Or a sneaky Tembe area herd hanging around there a century ago, like Knysna?

Addo a totally different strain!

Should make an interesting genetic study!
