I found this pic that is similar, and is of the Family Heptageniidae, as you suggested:

mayfly.jpg

Couldn't find similar looking Afronurus on Google Images, but I really am way out of my league w/ Mayflies - didn't know they were so difficult. Will have to rely on you for these.

The mottled one certainly has cross veins, so quite likely Leptophlebiidae.

I found so many discrepancies in diff. books/publications re: # of caudal filaments, wing venation (Picker et al doesn't even mention cross veins at all under their description of Leptophlebiidae -O- -O- ), etc 0: 0: UNCLE
The Heptageniidae are usually reddish or yellowish, so I think, we can make it one! ^Q^

And the mottled one is a Leptophlebiidae member.

Yes, indeed, we were staying at Punda Maria on 9/21 when that was taken. I know it was taken at a pond in camp because I took the Pond Skaters at the same time, but can't remember if Punda has a pond?? Anyway, wonderful you found that info. on a poss. new subspecies. 0/0
O/\ O/\ so this one is done.

Punda does not have a pond, but some bird baths and a pool.

Classification has changed, now family Corydiidae

I don't find any info other than the guide book, so we have to stick to the text there

Yes, I noticed that change when I was trying to find more info, to no avail. Will write it up tomorrow - do you prefer I post it here, so you can add/subtract info, or in the termite/roach topic? You're a goldmine of information. ^Q^ ^Q^ ^Q^ ^Q^

O/\ Put it to the termite/roach topic. It does not matter however as we can edit or add everywhere.

Maybe we should split this topic into termite and roach, they are now classified in one order, but the laymen reader would rather search them as two entirely different creatures? whereas the scientific reader might know that termites are just social roaches lol

At Klippie's suggestion, I sent the mayfly pics to Dr. Helen James for help with their IDs. She was very gracious and willing to help. :ty: :ty:

Seems mayflies confuse even the experts : " Euthrualus sp. is currently being revised by my student, we are fairly certain that it may proved to be a different species to the only species currently name in South Africa.
Cloeon is a taxonomic mess in terms of species recognition, and I am not sure of the species."

Here are her IDs:

Very interesting
