"This is a day of mourning at the Leshoka Thabang game farm."
So says Elva van der Merwe, spokesperson for a farm in Zebediela in the Limpopo district on Tuesday after two rhino were poached. She said Johan van Zyl, owner of the farm flew over the area with a helicopter when he found the two carcasses.
The two rhino, found in dense grass, were killed for their horns respectively two and five days ago.
Van der Merwe said the cruelty with which the animals were killed, is shocking and repulsive. She said the rhino horns were cut off while the animals were still alive. Drag and blood marks on the scene, indicated that one of the animals used sheet power to try and escape from his attackers. The poachers used an ax to chop one of the rhino's backs in two.
