"Mr. William Mabasa the communications manager of the KNP last week at a Concession holders meeting informed the attendees that they are planning to commence building of the Malelane Hotel in October 2012 and that the Skukuza Hotel will follow soon.
The truth is that the Malelane Hotel will not start being built in October 2012, the scoping report has not yet been finalized after which it has to be sent to the DEA for approval, after approval the draft EIA has to be completed and made available to the public for scrutiny before submission to the DEA for approval.
A further fact is that the whole assessment process has been put on ice (for the third time).
There are rumours that the appointed developer has withdrawn from the whole process, this still requires confirmation. It is also rumoured that SANParks are on the lookout for someone else.
As far as the Skukuza hotel is concerned, SANParks are currently getting their plans together - they also have to go through the whole process of scoping and EIA public participation and whatever else."

Here below is an extract from the daily newsletter published by the South African Travel Trade.

Steve Collins from the African Safari Lodge Foundation asserts that the lodge will open up the region, enabling visitors to travel through the Kruger National Park to the beach at Inhambane. “It’s the bush-to-beach experience that is significant. A lot of Barra Resorts’ self-drive guests will be able to go via the Kruger Park, stay over at Covane and then proceed to Inhambane, which cuts a whole leg off the trip. Otherwise one has to travel via Maputo, adding a further 300-400 kilometres to the journey.”

This refers to the travelers who can make use of the Giriyondo Border post north of Letaba.

Just a further reason why we have to resist the commercialization and exploitation of our Nature Assets.

I may also mention to you that a conference was held by the South African Affiliate of the International Association of Impact Assessment (IAIAsa). in Cape Town earlier this week and here is an extract from a communication received from a friend of mine who attended:

In my networking discussions with other professionals, there was some concern expressed by all (zero support) about the PDZ and proposed hotel.

I also know the provincial environmental office has opposed it.

What the hell does a hotel at Malelane or Skukuza got to do with the border post at Giriyondo. It is ridiculous to suggest that a person is better off going all the way to Malelane on the N4 then overnighting at the "hotel" and then driving all the way north to Giriyondo. There is no way this would save anyone time. People like Steve Collins need to get their facts straight before broadcasting such drivel.
