We photographed a sand piper,

Image

a yellow billed stork in flight

Image

and discovered close to where we parked under a bush a black crowned night heron

Image

as well as a juvenile green backed heron

Image

Image

who could be seen not far from each other

Image

Image

and finally also captured a white egret in flight.

Image

Back in camp we lit the braai and it was such a blessing to not get a heatstroke when leaving the air-conditioned bungalow and so Timon decided to do some running whilst I enjoyed my magic hour on our verandah until the braai was ready and we really enjoyed same very much.

Wednesday, 16. February 2022 – Lower Sabie – Skukuza

Explored roads: H4-1 – H10 – S128 – H10 – S32 – H1-2 – H1-1 – S65 – S1 – S42 – H11 – H4-1 – H12 – H1-2

Far too son it was again moving day and at that stage we did not know how memorable and impressive that day finally was as different than originally planned we could not drive all foreseen roads and therefore we obviously got a compensation in form of special sightings…….simply love such surprises!

We took it slow and stopped for a final stop on the Lower Sabie causeway but as nothing could be seen we soon carried on turning into the S128 where we detected kudus

Image

and a burchell’s coucal.

Image

As already said this road is normally in February overgrown and so it was this year again, however, as it was quiet we could not resist in taking a couple of bush view shots

Image

as especially with the dramatic clouds it was such a special morning atmosphere and it fits perfectly to the complete day.

We met hyenas who only could be seen when running on the road as the grass was high and the bushes more than thick

Image

and then we had a couple of nice bird sightings we noticed 2 brown eagles sharing a dead tree,

Image

another paradise whydah,

Image

two banana birds although the bushes were full of them

Image

and two cute magpie youngsters who were begging permanently for food.

Image

Luckily we could photograph as well a black backed jackal before same again disappeared in the high grass,

Image

another burchell’s coucal was willing to be captured

Image

and then we could not get enough from the bush atmosphere during that early morning.

Image

Originally we had planned to drive the S30 but surprisingly same was closed so we were at first stage a bit disappointed and as we also were not willing to drive back to Lower Sabie and then proceed via the H4-1 to Skukuza we decided to carry on via the H10 and H1-2 indeed a stretch we so far only drove once namely during our very fist Kruger visit.

But before we turned into the tar road we enjoyed our drive on the S128 as we were the only car there and so we again stopped for some bush views

Image

Image

the grass was still wet, dark clouds were still hanging low but the sun made its way through all of them which created indeed a more than fantastic atmosphere.

Image

Still on the gravel road we then came across a group of amur falcons and we are always extreme happy

Image

when finding them and they sat long enough still for a couple of shots.

Image

Image

to be continued……………….
