Tuesday, 5 April 2016 just before 11:00, Hawks members arrested a 37-year-old suspect in Bothasig on the corners of Giel Basson Drive and Bosmansdam Road for possession of illegal abalone.
The members stopped and searched a Ford Ranger LDV, loaded with suspicious boxes, which led to the discovery of several bags of abalone valued at around R2 million.
The vehicle has been impounded. The suspect is due to appear at Goodwood Magistrate court today, facing charges relating to contravention of living marine species.

This morning, Monday 18 April, members from the Western Cape Provincial Organised Crime Unit, Cape Town K9 Unit and officials from the Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries, responded to information of alleged illegal activity on a small holding on the outskirts of Langebaan and proceeded to investigate.
At approximately 07:00 they entered a warehouse situated alongside Langebaan road where they uncovered an illegal abalone processing facility. Various rooms were found inside the building, including a cooking area, drying rooms, a sorting room and living quarters. Numerous items of equipment used in the cooking and drying process were recovered which included large steel cooking pots, gas burners and cylinders, scales of different sizes, fans, drying shelves and temperature meters.
Upon further investigation the members also found another three rooms that were being equipped as hydroponic laboratories. Various lights, reflectors, fans and other items of equipment were seized. At the rear of the building a hothouse was found in which various dagga plants were growing. 37 936 Units of dried abalone and five units of wet shucked abalone weighing 2 185.90 were seized it is estimated to over R9 million street value.
Two suspects, ages 31 and 35 year old were found on the premises and arrested. The suspects are expected to appear in the Hopefield Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 19 April on charges under the Marine Living Resources Act.

CAPE TOWN - Three suspected abalone poachers have been arrested in the Cape Point area.

It's understood two of the suspects were handcuffed earlier this week by Table Mountain national parks rangers.

While the third person was caught on Friday night after hiding in the water trying to evade arrest.

City of Cape Town law enforcement's Wayne Dyason said: “When he was arrested he was suffering from severe hypothermia. At Monawabisi in the Khayelitsha area, the officers discovered 210 sized and 47 undersized dried abalone. No suspects were arrested.”

2 ) But you cannot be arrested unless you have committed a crime .

CAPE TOWN - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is hoping jail terms for four abalone poachers will send out a clear message that the plundering local natural resources will not be tolerated.

The men have been handed sentences of between five and 15 years, while a fifth man was handed a one-year sentence, suspended for five years.

Sentencing was handed down on Monday, about 12 years after police arrested them at an abalone processing facility.

The men, initially part of a group of nine accused, were arrested after they were found in possession of more than 82,000 units of abalone at a cold storage facility in Cape Town in 2006.

Police also found a substantial amount of dried perlemoen in a container.

The NPA’s Eric Ntabazalila says during the investigation, authorities managed to turn-around containers of perlemoen destined for Hong Kong.

Three of the men have applied for bail pending applications for leave to appeal their sentences.
