Identification
Dark head and chest. Exceptionally bright yellow eyes. In flight white underwings, with the inner primaries and secondaries barred with black.

239a. Northern Black Korhaan (White-quilled Korhaan) Afrotis afraoides

Identification
52 cm. The Northern Black Korhaan has a black belly and conspicuous white flashes in the primaries in flight.
Adult male: Head black with white cheek patches and brown crown. Neck and under parts black; the white collar on the mantle extends to the sides of the upper breast. The back is barred black and brown. The folded wing shows a broad white lower edge; otherwise barred black and brown. In flight, the primaries show white bases. The bill is red with a grey tip; the eyes are brown with a red eye-ring; and the legs are yellow.
Adult female: Similar to the adult male, but with a brown head, neck and breast (crown and neck barred black), and without the wite mantle collar.

764. Cape Glossy Starling (Glossy Starling) Lamprotornis nitens

Identification
25 cm. A rather large glossy starling with a short tail and an uniform appearance. Glossy blue head, blacker on ear-coverts. Blue-green upperparts with strong iridescence. Blue-green wings with distinctive bronzy-purple epaulet. Glossy blue-green tail. Blue iridiscence on throat and upper breast, greener gloss on lower breast, belly and undertail-coverts. Bright orange-yellow eye. Black bill and legs.
Sexes similar. Juveniles are duller with matt black underparts.

447. Lilac-breasted Roller Coracias caudatus

Identification
36 cm. Green head, greenish yellow legs. The beak is strong, arched and hooked-tipped. Brown back, shoulder of the wing, outer webs of flight feathers and rump are violet. Outer tail feathers are elongated and blackish. The chin is white, shading to rich lilac of the breast. The underparts are green blue. The bill is black and the eyes are brown.

Identification
43-45 cm. The only all-black crow likely to be seen. The bill, which is slightly decurved, is longer and more pointed than that of any other crow.

Identification
16-17 cm. Above light brown, rufous rump, conspicuous rufous upper tail has black subterminal band and white sides to the tip of the tail. Cap grey, whire eyebrows, black eye-stripe. Below white washed pale rufous.
