I got an email from Musungu who let me know that this entry in the Hemiptera, Heteroptera book, is actually Haemobaphus concinnus, NOT Spilostethus pandurus.

You are right, this entry is wrong, also the second photo from KNP is misidentified It is Spilostethus macilentus

Subfamily was correct, so not too bad

Yep, that's about the only article I found on this species, so I have virtually nothing to rewrite the entry from. Here's all I have -

Milkweed Bug Haemobophus concinnus (Dallas, 1852)
Family: Lygaeidae Subfamily: Lygaeinae


Lifestyle: Herbivore, sap sucker.
Habitat: Terrestrial.
Distribution: South & Western Africa; Betschuanaland
IUCN Conservation status: Not Evaluated.

I entered it in the book w/ the following admonition:

Due to considerable morphological uniformity, a proper identification of the spider genus Heliophanus causes many troubles. That is why there are numerous unidentified and misidentified specimens in many of the collections. The descrip­tions given in the prevailing majority of older publications are inadequate. Only a few papers dealing with regional arachnofaunas contain descriptions supplemented with figures rendering a possibility to correctly identify the species.

Nothing we can do, just update the distribution to South Africa, Namibia, Botswana

I have seen these spiny legs so far only in Stenaelurillus g. and all the other suspect ones have these legs too. Perhaps they are all the same species. What do you think, do we just file them along with the other one

Also the dark tip of the tarsi is good for all of them

and it also has, like the description for the genus Stenaelurillus, "Anterior edge of carapace always with long dense bristles."

Maybe just keep it vague - Stenaelurillus sp.

Better you put them to the St. g. post and write a line that we are not certain
