Media Release: Marked increase in service levels for SANParks Restaurant

Date: 9th May 2014

South African National Parks (SANParks) is proud to announce that two months after the opening of Mugg & Bean restaurant at Lower Sabie in the Kruger National Park (KNP) there has been a 127.67% increase in this facilities turnover.

This according to SANParks’ Managing Executive: Tourism Development and Marketing, Glenn Phillips, who said this new restaurant operator in Lower Sabie has done exceptionally well in the short space of time since the official opening on 12 March 2014. He said it was equally encouraging to see a marked increase in customer satisfaction levels in such a short period.

According to Phillips service levels in the same period last year stood at 57.7% and after Mugg & Bean resumed operations satisfaction levels increased to an impressive 75.8%. “These results are an indication of a good sustainable and practical solution all in an effort to satisfy our clients.”

Phillips said that in an effort to improve restaurant service and value for money a new model was introduced in 2014 where various franchised brands were introduced to SANParks. “This is part of the organizations Commercialisation Strategy which aims to enable private operators to become involved in selected commercial operations with the objective of, amongst other, generating revenue whilst improving service levels, BBBEE, creating jobs and contributing to local economic development”.

“The improved efficiency of the restaurant will result in more funds being secured for conservation, ensuring the continued sustainability of our Parks”, concluded Phillips. The other new restaurants in the KNP are all expected to be up and running by the end of September 2014.

Commercialisation Strategy which aims to enable private operators to become involved in selected commercial operations with the objective of, amongst other, generating revenue whilst improving service levels, BBBEE, creating jobs and contributing to local economic development

The previous bunch were also BEE...probably more so, if there is such a thing? :-?

How does this create more jobs? :-?

How does this create more LOCAL economic development? Equipment and Franchise branding manufacture is centred elsewhere in the country. Franchise supplies probably come more from Gauteng than in the past, with specific items mass-produced by these centres? Managers are new, presumably not local?

I am very happy and relieved that service has improved, make no mistake! \O

However, when SP used to run the restaurants, all workers were local, virtually all supplies were from local dealers, prices were therefore far better, and there was a sense of pride and synergy with the rest of the Kruger service delivery infrastructure.

So at least admit Kruger made a mistake, and don't BS about how this is an even better system, please. :-)

One may also wonder how quickly this partnership is going to extend to ALL SANParks? -O- 0()

Short sighted success written all over the walls!!! Long term disaster pending.

The beginnings of commercialisation!!! This norm thrives on self success!!!

Instead Sanparks utilising this norm for self purpose, they went and gave it all
away!!!,...too private enterprise!!!!

This scenario only shows the uselessness of the recent past!!!

A blatant comment from me directed at Sanparks,....

"You know that you are sitting on a goldmine yet don't know how to dig it up"

Geez, how sordid,.,,..

Exactly, H.

Most of that money will leave the Lowveld.

However, it must be remembered that restaurants under old-old Kruger management ran at little profit, if not loss...not designed for moneymaking, rather adding to affordable visitor experience etc. Jobs and suppliers remained firmly in the Lowveld, however, with a sustainable ripple effect regarding the lowveld economy.
