They are tiny: females beween 3,7 and 7,3 mm, males between 3,6 and 5,8 mm.

To tell if it is female, we would need a lateral view to see the hump on the end of the abdomen.

In Nelspruit this morning....obviously impossible to get a proper pic of a hawk moth in flight!

Still very easy to identify

Macroglossum trochilus African hummingbird hawk-moth.

It hovers while sipping nectar from tubular flowers, common garden visitor

It gererates lift by moving its wings in a figure eight pattern.
