Back in camp we took a short break on our verandah and decided to pay the Cattle Baron a visit for lunch also to stretch our legs a bit and during our walk to the restaurant for sure we met again a crested barbet

Image

and whilst having lunch which was also here delicious we observed a couple of blue waxbills taking a shower under one of the sprinklers.

Image

Image

After we also bought a couple of things from the shop we strolled back to our bungalow where we relaxed a bit until it was again time for our afternoon drive which led us again into the direction of Girivana. Along the H7 under a shady tree we stopped for a waterbuck

Image

and once again we detected a grey shrike.

Image

The wild dogs obviously where still there as a couple of cars were hanging around at the spot we noted them earlier but they were still extreme hard to see as most of them were invisible and only from time to time we saw something moving and on top they had chosen a spot to rest in a ditch. We waited quite a long time to at least got a proof shot

Image

but as meanwhile far too many cars arrived we carried on and enjoyed a stop at Girivana where a group of kudu bulls just arrived

Image

Image

and also a group of baboons was sitting in the grass or were running between the legs of the kudus.

Image

It was such a wonderful light and we stayed there quite a long time until we slowly started our drive back to camp.

On the roadside we noted two younger hyenas lying on the ground

Image

resting in the shade

Image

they both simply were too cute so also here we spent quite a while until it was in fact time to return back to camp.

Image

Image

At the end of the S40 lots of impalas were hanging around as well as this warthog who we also spotted the following evenings regular there.

Image

Meanwhile it was already extreme late and Timon nearly got mad as on the H1-4 nothing moved we were once again caught in a traffic jam which only could mean the lions from early in the morning were back and in fact so it was. At the beginning we only could took shots between the many cars

Image

but luckily the queue moved but still slowly so we photographed most of the lions whilst driving by as it was already that late.

Image

At least we allowed us moments to stop and suddenly also most of the cars carried on and we found a couple nearly all to ourselves

Image

Image

who soon started again to block the road.

to be continued………………

Also here we allowed us a couple of minutes before we carried on

Image

Image

only to be again held up by more lions.

Image

We could maneuver ourselves safety though all the cars and lions and as it was meanwhile 18.27 o’clock still a couple of cars drove into our direction so we had this impressive male all to ourselves.

Image

Same stopped from time to time, looked into the veld and carried on his walk only to stop again.

Image

Image

More than happy with all the sightings we had that day we finally returned to camp and whilst I already enjoyed my vine on our verandah Timon decided to run a bit in camp. Later he told me that the gate was still open around 19.00 o’clock obviously there was a very socially minded guard at the gate who allowed the people to watch the lions a bit longer.

Sunday, 19. February 2023 – Satara

Explored roads: H1-4 – S90 – S41 – H6 – H7 – S12 – S40 – H7 – H1-4 – H7 – S12 – S40 – H7 – H1-4

After our obligatory coffee on our verandah we packed everything together and today we turned left but today no lions were hanging around and overall it was nearly dead quiet all along the tar road besides a black backed jackal we unfortunately only could capture from the back.

At least the marabou storks who came across next were willing to pose

Image

we already turned into the S90 and it was still a bit misty and the high grass was extreme wet as if it rained again over night but luckily the sun already started to set

Image

which made such a wonderful light onto this giraffe shot.

Image

Obviously the animals still were fast asleep on that Sunday morning as also along the S90 it was very quiet or simply the grass was far too high. We came across another kori bustard or it was the same we already met the day before,

Image

a burchell’s coucal who was a bit hidden but these two lilac breasted rollers could be easily photographed.

Image

We met no other cars so had the road all to ourselves and at one of our beloved causeways Timon soon discovered a malachite kingfisher

Image

who stayed quite a while with us until same took off only to return later at another spot far too hidden for our camera

Image

and whilst watching and photographing the malachite a verreaux eagle owl flew above us only to land on a tree a bit farer away. Unfortunately this was the one and only owl we saw during this trip.

Image

After the malachite could only longer be detected we stopped for a tawny eagle as well as juvenile bateleur sharing a dead tree

Image

and then we already turned into the S41 where we soon were entertained by a troop of baboons

Image

whereout the youngsters were in an extreme good mood

Image

and teased each other on a fallen tree

Image

Image

also in view to keep themselves away from the high and wet grass.

Image

For sure again masses of impalas could not be overlooked

Image

nor the nicely posing waterbuck ladies,

Image

a red-backed shrike

Image

as well as another kori bustard.

Image

to be continued………………
