After showing everybody who was boss, ol big mouth wandered down into the river.

Testing the water with his pinkies in case it was too cold.

Before taking the plunge and moving in deeper.

Meanwhile, a week last Tuesday, just around lunchime, on the Khwai River, this pod were lazing in the sunshine with an attendant Jacana.

Image

A yellow-billed oxpecker was also tending to their ticks and wounds.

Although he may have gone a little too far with this one.

Image

Further along the river, another pod were not so lucky with the sunshine.

Image

But were still quite vocal, as hippos normally are.

Image

While this pod had an attendant red-billed oxpecker who was not as rough with his clients as his cousin was.

Wonder if those hippo bulls are a bit less "well-built" in the head than our local ones because they live in paradise? They obviously go at each other!

But permanent water and food? -O-

I don't think so RP, there were some really big bulls about, I just photographed the smaller ones as they were the ones that came close enough. \O X#X

You must have been grinning ear to ear when you downloaded this trips photos! ^Q^ ^Q^ ^Q^ Catching up tonight, I just kept saying, "Oh wow", over and over. O/\ The African darter, the monitor pics (" trying to hide under overhanging branches" =O: =O: =O: ), Cape buffalo close-ups, skimmers (the Florida ones are prettier O** O** ^0^ )....and on and on. The way I'm fawning over your pics, you'd think I was in need of a loan or something, but they are truly wonderful.

There's one thing that confuses me, however, and since you like to enlighten the readers - just where do the hippos get the bananas and popcorn that are obviously part of their diet? -O-
