Basically a reconstruction of the tusker Duke will be erected at Crocodile Bridge, with fibreglass tusks. A private venture:

Dawie Fourie van Marlothpark het in samewerking met die organisasie sonder winsoogmerk, Stop Poaching Endangered African Rhino (SPEAR), ‘n projek van stapel gestuur om een van die groot olifante van die Nasionale Krugerwildtuin, Duke, se geraamte by die Krokodilbrug se ruskamp te herbou.

Dawie Fourie is nie net ‘n merkwaardige skilder nie, maar sy fanatiese liefde vir olifante en sy kreatiwiteit strek baie wyer. Hy het reeds sy naam groot gemaak met sy skeletrekonstruksies en word heelwat betrek by SPEAR se Duke-projek, ‘n langtermynprojek wat ‘n monument vir die toekoms sal wees.

Duke was een van die sewe olifante wat merkwaardige lang tande gehad het en te danke aan die insig van die veldwagter Neels van Wyk, is beide hierdie olifant se verlore tande gevind voor hy dood is. Nadat hy ‘n kraag met ‘n opsporingstoestel in sy later jare gekry het, is sy hele liggaam na sy dood gevind en kon sy skelet behou word. Na vele beplanning en projekontwikkeling, sal Duke gerekonstrueer en ten toon gestel word vir besoekers by die Krokodilbrug.


Die projek is reeds verlede jaar toegeken en is aan die Komatipoort Voortrekkerkommando voorgelê. Daar word voorsien dat die ontwikkelende uitstalling ‘n aanloklikheid in eie meriete sal wees. Op Vrydag 4 Februarie, het Fourie aan die kommando die geskiedenis van Duke en die projek se proses verduidelik. Die olifant se beendere moet vir meer as 24 uur gekook word om van vette en oorskiet ontslae te raak. Daarna kan die herbouing eers plaasvind.

Vir veiligheid sal die tande in veselglas gegiet word – elke skrapie en merk. Die sakegemeenskap en mense met ‘n passie vir diere word genooi om die projek finansieel te ondersteun. Die borge sal tydens die onthulling en bekendstelling erkenning geniet by wyse van plaatjies wat by die konstruksie opgerig sal word.


SPEAR glo dat die konstruksie teen November voltooi sal wees.

I hope you can help .

Met this big guy on the S28 near Crocodile Bridge .Pretty sure he is a big tusker (possibly dzuweni ?) or was as he only has one left .He was not a happy camper and was in Musth so we had quite a wait to get past . lol

Hi Roger,

I am sure it's not Dzuweni. The one you posted has a inward curved left tusk, Dzuweni's tusks are upward and not really inwards. Next to that I don't see a match with his left ear and his trunk.

Must be another bull , but no named / known tusker , at least not for me
