Re: Leopard

Post by okie »

This morning , one of my neighbours ( about 5 km from me ) , told me that he had found the spoor of a Cape Mountain Leopard , plus that of a cub O:V .
These very rare animals are extremely shy , and are very very seldom seen , although hikers and climbers in the mountains , do often see signs of their presence .

Your neighbours should set up a trap camera :-0

Video: Leopard VS Porcupine

Post by RogerFraser »

https://youtu.be/0Yh-oACk7jg

http://lowvelder.co.za/375446/video-leo ... porcupine/

The videographer says:

“We were on our morning game drive. I believe we were driving up Tshokwane towards Sweni Wilderness and Satara(if memory serves me right).

Our Ranger/Guide, then noticed a group of Hyenas resting at near a watering hole from afar. He then noticed a group of 4 cars on the road across from where we were. He made his way towards it and then 2 Porcupines emerged from the manhole underneath the road.

They had their spines all out in defense. One of it dashed away, while the other went head on and confronted the predator in the manhole. We were wondering what it was and then the Leopard emerges with a swipe as one of the Porcupine charges towards it. The Porcupine then dashed across the road away from its retreating partner and continued to out smart the Leopard.

The Leopard tried its very best to get to the Porcupine’s front and it managed to cause quite a bit of a cut on its left leg. Not sure if this video does it just. But what a beautiful sight!

Our guide then explain this was a relatively young Leopard and skinny too, due to the dry season in December. Instead of aiming for an Impala which are agile and fast, this young Leopard figured taking down a Porcupine would not take as much effort. Boy was it wrong.”

Since I've never seen a porcupine in real so far I didn't have a clue how big they would appear compared to a leopard

Great sighting! You have to wonder why a leopard would go after such a prickly meal! 0-

Notice how that JJ sped up to the sighting!!
