This choice comes much closer than the Leopard Tortoise.

I just found another picture of the same animal - not in motion, but better quality. Next time, I will clean it before taking a photo!

This one resembles even more a padloper, I'd say.

An older female can grow quite large up to 15 cm and only the young ones have the bright colours.

The large overlapping scales on the forelimbs are distinctive for the padlopers.

You must return to Duwisib and get a clean young one.

first of all: I don't wanna drive you crazy. I absolutely agree that it's a padloper, but I'm not sure which one. In my opinion it could be a
- Chersobius solus, Nama padloper
- Chersobius boulengeri, Red padloper, Boulenger's padloper
- Homopus femoralis, Karoo padloper, Greater padloper

To be honest, I prefer the last choice. It's because of the shape of the carapace - especially at the sides, which are much more rounded than the others. Or should this be a coincidence? And Homopus femoralis is the largest of the padlopers, too. What do you think?

Hard to tell because you don't see the carpace scutes very well


It looks very much like the H. femoralis, but I doubt that they have an alien species there, and I am not sure if it would be possible to get an import permit. Are there pet breeders?

There is a tourist route nearby, called Nama padloper route, so it would make sense to have some local padlopers as a tourist attraction.

Nonetheless the alien is a better match

It looks laike it has only 4 claws, do you agree? If so, than we have the solution. Or does it have five and one is hidden?

Thank you for your efforts. It's really exciting. Looks like 4 claws, so it would be a Homopus femoralis.

To terminate all doubts I will try to contact somebody right there. I will let you know, if I get an answer.

But now it's time for two holiday weeks - so I'm gone for a while.

eight weeks later I sadly got no answer from Duwisib. So I finally decided for Homopus femoralis (Karoo Padloper). Maybe I'm right, maybe not, we 'll never know.
