Identification
38-46 cm. Massive red bill and frontal shield, red legs and toes. Bright purplish-blue head and underparts and a green back offset by bright white under-tail coverts.
Immature is duller, brownish with red brown legs.

Identification
Length 35 cm, mass 160-293 g; the largest African lapwing.
Brown, black crown, white forehead and large yellow facial wattles, upperwings have black flight feathers and brown coverts separated by a white bar, underwings are white with black flight feathers. White tail, tipped black, and the long legs are yellow.

Identification
17 cm; sexes alike. Fairly large stocky lark, with short but distinctive erectile rufous crest, and rufous wing panel that is usually more visible in flight than on ground. Characteristically sings from top of fence post, termite mound or shrub.
Juvenile: Darker above with buff edging to feathers.

Identification
14 cm (streamers = 6 cm); sexes alike, long outer tail streamers are often absent in the austral summer months (non-br season). Diagnostic features are chestnut-rufous throat and forehead, blue-black breast band, glossy steel blue upper parts and deeply forked tail. White windows clearly visible in tail when spread.
Juvenile: Buffy forehead, paler chin and throat and duller and browner upperparts.
Non-br Palearctic migrant. First arrivals in Sept, most in act or early Nov.
