The two common species of sugarbushes in the Drakensberg are P. caffra caffra and P. roupelliae. You find them in the river valleys in "communities" of Protea Savanna. P. caffra is more common in the north and P. roupelliae in the south.
Four other species occur in the berg:
P. subvestita
P. dracomontana
P. simplex
P. nubigena
