A giraffe has two types of gait. One, called pacing, is slow. The giraffe carefully moves the legs on one side of its body forward, then brings the other side's legs forward. Scientists speculate that the reason giraffes don't use a diagonal walk (where opposite limbs move forward at the same time) as other four-legged creatures do is that their legs are too long and could become entangled. When pacing, the giraffe's neck slowly moves back and forth to help maintain balance. The giraffe's faster gait is called a gallop. While galloping, a giraffe's neck thrusts forward and backward with greater Speed. The giraffe's hind legs push off the ground together, thrusting the forelegs forward and into the air. When the forelegs touch the ground, they quickly push off again. For a brief moment, the entire body of the giraffe is airborne. Then the hind legs land together, and the process starts over. A galloping giraffe can reach speeds as fast as 64 km per hour.
