Re: Nyala - Mammal of the Month September 2014
There in okie's pic on the right you can see a normal young bull!
Harry was at Maroela Camp, don't know if the bull is in the Timbavati river, but Nyala have been steadily spreading southward in Kruger over the last decade, along the rivercourses like Timbavati, methinks due to the very much extended wet cycle!
In Kruger, there is a similarly growing population in the South, along the Sabie river. Nyala were first spotted there many decades ago...mostly Natal stock having escaped from private reserves in the Sabie Sands...not their natural environment at all...an invader species there!
They have now moved up to Tshokwane, for example, and will soon start breeding with the Timbavati bunch, which probably also includes private Klaserie/Timbavati Natal animals already..
A rare mixup which should be studied genetically, IMO!

Certainly Nyalas are becoming more prevalent south of the Olifants river .
This one was seen near Tsokwane on 19th September 2010

And this one , at Ngotso , last year on 12th September , with a bull deeper in the shrub .

Enough is enough

Ja, okie! The Ngotso and Timbavati lead South from the Olifants.
Thanks, Harry!
Nyala are quite strict about living in dense bush as much as possible!
Think they are moving up the Nwaswitsontso by now, not sure about Sweni/Nwanetsi?
