Southern Giraffe - 10 Points

Estimated Abundance in the Kruger Park: 6,800-10,300 (2010)
Status: not endangered.
Mass: ♂ 1000-1900 kg; ♀ 700-1200kg. Total height: ♂ 4.5-5.5 m; ♀ 3.9-4.5 m. Shoulder height: ♂ 2-3.5 m; ♀ 1-2.5 m.
Distinguishing features: The tallest animal in the world, its long neck rendering it unmistakable. Patchwork patterning of the coat is unique for each individual. Body slopes downwards towards the rear, with the torequarters appearing longer than the hindquarters, but they are the same length.
Life-span: ± 25 years.
Predators: Main predators include lion and leopard. Young fall prey to cheetah, spotted hyena and crocodile.
Kruger Park distribution: Occur in all the ecozones of the Kruger, except L (Mopane shrubveld), with the highest density concentrations occurring between the Sabie and the Olifants rivers. They are also common south of the Olifants River, and north of the Olifants River around the Olifants Camp area. Further to the north they are rare, being almost absent north of Punda Maria.

Estimated Abundance in the Kruger Park: 23,700-35,300 (2010)
Status: Not endangered
Mass: ♂ 290-340 kg; ♀ 260-320 kg. Shoulder height: ♂ 1.3-1.4 m; ♀ 1.3-1.4 m.
Distinguishing features: Black and white striped patteming is unique for each individual. An erect black and white mane extends trom the head to the shoulders.
Life-span: ± 25 years.
Predators: Main predators include lion and spotted hyaena; others include leopard and crocodile. Young fall also pre to wild dog and cheetah.
Kruger Park distribution: Occur widely and commonly in suitable habitat in all ecozones of the Kruger Park. Densest concentrations are found on the open plains of the central regions and in the eastem parts of the Park.
