31 December 2014 - Satara to Olifants

So we had our one night at Satara and made for Sweni Hide at 4.30am hoping to spend the better part of the morning there. The hide was actually disappointing compared to June as the water level was high and not much bird activity. Good thing we found these two handsome guys on our way to the hide. They were on the H6 about 2 km before the turn to the S37 and we had them to ourselves for the first 20 minutes :-)

31 Deceneber 2014 to 03 January 2015 - Olifants Camp

Top of our list for this trip was the Phantom Fishing Owl therefore the 4 nights in Punda and the 4 nights in Olifants. We also had a morning walk booked to find the Phantom. Our first morning out of Olifants we found 4 lions on the H1-4 (one is behind the bish on the right)

We moved on as you can only take so many photos of lions :O^ . Near Nyamrhi we found the leopard and cub again. Although I stopped a distance from them they were not hanging around but we got two photos of the Mom

We did the early morning walk from Olifants on our second morning. If you want to see the Phantom you have to request it in advance otherwise the walk will be in another area. We set off at 4.30 am.

The area is behind Balule Camp. We have done this walk in search of the Phantom twice before. Well, this morning we got a great sighting of the Phantom even if we did not get a great photo. He was perched in a tree. Then flew off to another tree. He then returned and flew overhaed before he settled down in another tree. We only have this picture but it is worth a 1000 words O:V

3 January 2014

Our last full day in the park. We head south on the H1-4 from Olifants towards Satara. About 10 km north of Satara there are a few cars parked off. We are told that a lion pride had killed 3 buffalos the night before  We see 4 lionesses, 4 cubs and two youn meales feeding on one carcass. There are vultures all over the place.
