Flavour of the Month Dec 2011: Nsemani Dam

Just before Nsemani dam these lion were resting up in the shade.

We were in the queue at the gate for opening time. The sunrise was stunning and again gave everything
an orange glow.


We made our way down to Nsemani dam to see if the lions were there. Two males walked up the road towards us
and then made their way into the grass. They were on a mission so I only managed 1 photo before they were gone.



Closer to the dam were 3 cubs, but no sign of their mums anywhere.





This little guy had a bare patch under his neck. Not sure watch the cause of it was



It was an early breakfast for a big croc with a decent sized barbel.

We went back via Nsemani dam where a big ellie was enjoying a bath.












We had lunch and a swim then made our way to the pick up point for the sunset drive.


Back to Nsemani on the drive where, once again, the sunset was beautiful. The light over the dam was lovely.

After a late lunch and a swim it was back to Nsemani where a big ellie was slowly making his way to the dam



Below the wall a couple of bushbuck were having a drink. It was still very hot



and Mr Monkey looking full of mischief.

I wonder what the water situation is at Nsemani Dam at the moment -
or may what it was like after the last rainy season?

INTERLUDE :

One late afternoon I was sitting at Nsemani dam, watching the Impi’s graze and the antics of the vervets.

In front of me I saw a procession of cars coming from Satara, moving very, very slowly.
Sure they were after the resident leopard, but there wasn’t a way I could join them, unless I fell into the back of the line.
After a few moments I crossed over the road, facing them and stopped to look at the beautiful scenery.
They were still a long way off, so I wouldn’t be in the way.

The next moment this male lion appeared. Wow. I grabbed my camera and starting clicking away.



He looked at me and with the whispers of the wind I could clearly hear him saying......
I was over the moon with excitement.



And then he turned round and disappeared in bush… I was numb.



I saw the line of cars had come nearer and then decided to give way.
I asked the peeps in the first car what they were searching for and they said they saw bits of a male lion and they were looking for him.
My only answer was : Really… There was no way they would believe my story.

But gladly the lions were good to us this morning – we already thought that this sighting was finished in special with all the cars following them in fact they cleared the road but only to appear on the other side vis-à-vis Nsemani dam on the rocks and one after the other appeared in front of a huge very muddy looking puddle and started to drink



which was great to watch.





Some of them already started to chose their favourite place on the rocks and whilst some of them were quenching their thirst the others made themselves already comfortable on the rocks which must have already been heated up a bit by the morning sun.



It was a more than idyllic place they had chosen far enough away from the road not to get disturbed any longer and we were extreme lucky that we still had a first class view onto nearly all of them -

and all other family members.



Out of one younger female the cat came through and something came into her head as still one late bloomer arrived from the road and she was stalking and hiding behind a huge rock.
