Mazithi is another favourite...always something to see! \O

A- Shade 1/5
B- Closeness to the water 5/5 - Right next to the road
C- Rare mammal species 2/5 - Seen the Mazithi lions here often
D- Proximity to a camp/gate (ease of access) 2/5
E- Remoteness (off the main roads) 1/5

Richprins wrote: Thu May 03, 2018 8:25 am For me the following factors are important:

A- Shade
B- Closeness to the water

E- Remoteness (off the main roads)

My fave waterhole is Sunset Dam. Ticks all my boxes

Shade = not really an issue early morning and late afternoon
Closeness = important from a photography point of view
Rare mammal species = never seen anything really rare. But have had good hippo, elephant and lion sightings. As well as plenty of impala & waterbuck. And the birding is excellent.
Proximity to camp = distance from LS means one can sit here right up to gate closing
Remoteness = right outside a big camp on a busy road. But I have found that most people drive past slowly, scan the area and move on. There is plenty of place to park next to the road. And I have never felt crowded

Leeupan, Kumana and Nsemani are 3 other favourites of mine.

Should be though. Some people do not know these water holes. With a pic you get an idea of how they are.

I would like to answer, but there are so many...
I always stop at Sunset Dam for the birds, there are always many to see (but I have not seen so many mamals, except Impala, Baboons or Hippos).
I like the waterholes where there is a hide, at least you have complete shade (Sweni, Ratel Pan, Ntandanyathi)...
