They do fly away..but sometimes not quick enough. I also think the doves get used to jackals being there as they are not always hungry ...and then they get caught off guard.

In fact there is always a jackal around there, whenever you pass.....and doves too

Yep, these are such fun shots to try and capture. You never know moment to moment what will transpire. Wonderful depth of field on all the doves

We were on our last game drive of our 8 day stay in the park when we came across a jackal frantically sniffing around a myriad of dens. Just after we pull up alongside he selected one hole and started digging furiously .
Every so often he would pop up and have a quick look around him.
But he was intent on his digging and we were intent on staying and watching what he was digging for.

Finally he popped up with a ground squirrel...

We suspect the squirrel was dead already ...there didn't seem to be a struggle at all and squirrel was quite lifeless.

The jackal was very unsettled and moved around a lot while eating the squirrel. He had to gobble it up before he lost his meal to something else.
He ate very last bit of that squirrel...the tail got pulled off and munched.
Absolutely nothing went to waste...
It took the Jackal 8 mins to devour his meal

I was a bit flabbergasted at first and had to check the year twice, because the date of the last comment was the 13th,
just like your entry today

Interesting sequence, even if it might not be easy to watch. But very interesting and it shows how sustainable jackals act

Yes I periodically go missing and then pop up again - such is life...:)
Once the prey is dead then I don't mind watching..it's the killing part I don't like.
