Re: Walking with Grizzlies
Thank you for your comments Mel, Flutterby, Jillinflorida, Nan, Richprins, Lisbeth, Heksie, H. Erectus & Pumbaa.
Mel - I cannot put into words how we felt being so close to these bears. It was an incredible experience.
Flutt's - All of them laid out that way at one point or another. It must be comfortable for them and great to see.
Jill - Not a dumb question, quite valid. No odours noticed apart from the usual outdoorsy smells of the wild. Even their droppings did not smell that much, but more on those later. -O See my reply to RP re manicures.
Nan - Yes, there were smiles all round. I'm still smiling now after these encounters with the bears.
RP - My toenails could do with a trim seeing as you are so interested in my appearance. You are now my official stylist/chiropodist.
All American Brown Bears are termed "Grizzlies" by most people, but it really only applies to the smaller bears of the interior who are normally solitary and more aggressive than the Coastal Brown & Kodiak Bears found in this region. They are all the same species though, just different behavioural & colour patterns that have developed over the millenia to regional conditions. The interior Grizzlies have whiter tips to the outer hairs than the ones shown here, but all are variable.
Lis - He had pale "eyebrows" on his forehead.
He features again later in the TT when he shows us who is boss on his patch.
Heksie - Now you know why I had to do my laundry. -O There's a different coloured bear on an earlier TT further down the titles page if you have not seen it yet.
We did have a blast. One of the best wildlife experiences I've had to date.
H.E. - Very satisfying. Too much so as I'm finding things a bit boring now I'm back home and want more exciting encounters.
Pumbba - They were just like big Teddies. I'm even greener of some of your sightings.

Re: Walking with Grizzlies
Another character that we met was this three or four year old that had been recently weaned and abandoned by his mother. He seemed to take comfort in our presence as he was very wary of the larger bears in the area.
After munching on sedges for a while, he came down to the river to drink.

He kept taking quick glances at us and seemed very curious. (It's rude to stare in bear society as it's an aggressive display).

But eventually looked up at us for a split second when his curiosity got the better of his politeness.

Before going all shy on us again.

We watched as he took a bath in the river. "RP will be pleased." I mused at the time.

Then spin dried himself with a shake of the head.

"I hope they enjoyed the show."

He checked that the coast was clear.

Before wandering back towards the sedge grass to continue feeding.

What would be next? Walking through the Brazilian forests in search of the colourful parrots and toucans? It is in my 5 year plan
I just started with birdwatching and I believe that it has the most exotic birds
The bear having a bath was too amazing! How long did you sit with him? So their diet consists of sedge (grass)? and fish...
Great photos

Can't help but feeling sorry for the bear.
Very cute, but he seems so lost...

I don't think we need to know that...
No, Lis...I don't have enough hair to "spin dry"...
Great pics again!

Re: Walking with Grizzlies
So you think RP's dodgy internal organs would be able to stand that kind of water temperature, do you?
