I am on a ridge with a view towards the ocean which can be reached on foot but no longer by car.

In the south of KNP near camp Shonga (east of Croc Bridge). It's about 100 km from the sea and standing on the Lebombo moutains at 1270 feet might do the trick?

If its a spot reach by us normal tourist it must be close to the start of the Lebombo 4x4 route.

I know exactly where it is, and am also irritated that one can't drive up there anymore! (but it's been like that for a decade or so?)

Correct RP ! It was closed soon after Metsi Metsi trails camp was built - one could hear motor vehicles labouring up the incline .
