If one reads through this long thread, it is amazing how lucky humans are in Africa, for the most part:

Agreed RP. I'm busy reading 101 Kruger Tales and there are many frightening close encounters in Kruger! O-/

I am convinced that from the glance of this leopard, that it was out of it's mind in one way or another.

Guys, the planning of SANParks is to stop all selfdrive in the south in any case, and privatise camps in Kruger IMHO. O** This incident is to be taken very seriously as it shows the shortcomings of the current system in Kruger.

I dont say ban OSV's. I know a lot of guides that are great, responsible and also passionate. Unfortunately there are some lesser guides, for lack of a better word. I personally have contact with these guides on a regular basis, and the guys that are good are the ones that is constantly re-assesed by the company.

One guide I have a lot of contact with in the park, he is paying his own way, doing birding courses, etc.etc. etc.

In my tours I have rules. Number one: Never Fraternise with the guests. Number 2: Never call yourself a ranger, Number 3: You are in control, not the guest......and the list goes on.

Unfortunately I constantly have to sit at a local having a beer with snotnosed kids, guys that has been in Africa for 6 months during their training that tells all(Especially the gals) they are RANGERS 0*\ and how they look a lion in the eye and is never scared etc.

I blame the Fgasa Body affiliates/trainers for that. It is something they breed in their trainees, with their Gung ho attitude. The trainees mostly go back to some home country, but some stay. But it is a money spinner, R140 000.00 easy for your training.

The problem is that these training facilities consist of i.e. a reserve with one lion male to train on, 2 leopards, 11 elephants all used to this training. And I am speaking of a specific training facility here, and the figures are true.

This incident could have far reaching effects, but I say, change this whole money making scheme from Fgasa, and you will be left with the ones that want to do this guiding for passion of nature. Not tips, tails and ego.

If this leopard is so easily seen as mad, a Nature Guru/Guide should have stayed away. O/

Toe hy daar los, gryp hy my been.”

Toe hy daar los, gryp hy my been.”

“Ek het my tjommie dadelik gebel en gesê hy moet my kom help.”

Will translate if English version doesn't come out, but basically an attack near Driekop on 25 June, while searching for missing cattle on the mountain.

Eliot Mkhonto, 56, was admitted to Sabie Hospital with wounds to his right hand, arm and knee after having been attacked by a leopard on June 25. The attack took place about five kilometers outside Pilgrim’s Rest towards Driekop.

Just after dark Mkhonto had joined his friend Harold Mashego in searching for his cattle. They saw an animal running across their path after which their two big dogs started barking and tried to attack the animal. As they drew closer the predator rushed at Mashego who was able to get out of the way. Mkhonto threw a stone which hit the animal in the face and then it leapt at him. He was bitten and scratched while fighting off the animal but he was saved from more serious injury when the dogs attacked and chased it into the bush.

“I was very afraid, I thought we were going to die and then we ran into the bushes,” said Mashego who witnessed the attack. Although suffering some injuries, the dogs returned home safely after two days.

A representative of Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Association (MTPA) went to see Mkonto in Sabie Hospital on Thursday, July 2, and confirmed that he was attacked by a leopard. MTPA officials will now take the necessary steps to trap the leopard.

The SAPS has appealed to the public to be careful when walking in the bush, especially after dark when these predators are hunting.

Looking at the second video, and doing CSI, it seems the OSV was out of eyeshot regarding this first attempt...but well, as said, it was behaving uniquely, IMO. :-?

Agreed Scipio but then again, for a long time now we all know that
money is the root of all evil,...and exploitation continues of such
resources, rife,..yet sees no reprimand!!!! No one really but a few
that contest this behavior of mankind.

I just cannot understand why this very last and small piece of
wonderland left, for humans, it should be subject to financial
exploitation,...
