A Cat a Day, almost every day: Kgalagadi Oct/Nov 2023

While we were busy sorting out our stuff that afternoon in camp, Debbie moved a pillow which was on the floor and yelled

“Gavin Come here”

Being the dutiful husband I did, only to discover the subject of her anxiety was a rather large, thick tailed (the dangerous type) scorpion
I caught the offending creature in a Tupperware dish and placed it outside, out of the way.

Just goes to show, you need to be aware all the time in the Kgalagadi, we had been walking around the chalet either barefoot or wearing only slops. There could have been a very different ending to our day.

On our last trip I saw my first scorpion ever. Never listened when Franco told me to wear reasonable shoes.
Well, I do now.

S is for ....snake, scorpion, suricate, springbok, sparrows, sleepy cats and sunsets....
We also saw so many lions in Feb this year. I stopped counting at 57 different lion..

For our afternoon drive, we decided to go back along the Auob in the hope of seeing the leopard at Montrose.
We left Kieliekrankie at about 4.30, and all was pretty quiet as we bumbled up the road.

The lions near Gemsbokplein were flat as pancakes, as were the hyenas further north
Two cars were camped off at Montrose, but no leopard, so we decided to go a bit further north


Along the way we had a great sighting of this martial eagle.

But then we both go FOMO and decided to return to Montrose.

Just as well that we did, because when we were approaching the waterhole we spotted a cat walking across the riverbed.

A young male leopard.


It lay down behind a bush, just off the road.

We watched him for quite a while, and then he got up and moved past us,

onto the road, and over the dunes on the west

We all tend not to be careful enough in the parks...until it happens

So now, after the adrenalin settled, we needed to start heading back to Kieliekrankie

I did need to stop to photograph my favourite antelope as the wended their way down the riverbed
