Re: Kruger NP: Rhino and Elephant injure tourists

Post by Richprins »

Yes...it attacked two Cars!

Ms Fourie took all the pics in the articles. She first spotted the ellie confronting the Chevrolet. It pushed the car forward from behind, goring it and even lifting it off the ground and dropping it, hence the different puncture marks. It then moved to the side and gored it. She then drove around the corner and found the Hyundai with the British tourists already flipped.

Rangers arrived on the scene and secured the area, before other staff arrived, who flipped the car back onto its wheels. The rangers left to trail the elephant, and the other staff kept on insisting on driving the couple to Malelane Gate where they could wait for a replacement rental car...instead of perhaps taking the shocked tourists to their destination, at least! 0-

Eventually Lukimbi offered to accommodate the couple, even throwing in an evening drive! The couple politely declined any more drives! ;-)

The couple were relaxing on the Natal coast at the time the article was written.

(This extra information is new and has not been leeched from any other forum... O** )

i dont know why you laugh at my comment :O^ :O^ :O^

when there are still conflicting newspaper reports about these two incidents 0*\ 0*\ 0*\ 0*\

the articles posted by toko from news 24 and from the star/cape argus mention that both vehicles where flipped over by the elephant

however, today's lowvelder claims that the chev was merely lifted off the ground and dumped back down again on all 4 wheels

"false information to add to the sensationalism".

News24 got their info from the Beeld reporter, and mistranslated the Afrikaans bit about "lifting up", I think? \O

Rogue elephant kills brothers

Post by leachy »

Front page news. The Star 7 March 2013

Limpopo - An elephant at the Balule Nature Reserve in Hoedspruit, Limpopo, has killed a reserve worker after killing his brother the week before, it was reported on Monday.

Nelson Bango was searching for the elephant which killed his brother William, when it attacked him on his motorbike around 5pm on Monday, The Star newspaper reported.

“Nelson stalled the bike and then tried to run from the elephant, but after 100m the elephant caught him, and to our immense horror killed him,” Balule chairman Anthony Dott told the newspaper.

William was trampled and gored to death while laying a water pipe close to owner Steven Hearne's camp.

“We are shocked that this bull has killed another of our workers, and we find it unbelievable that William's brother was the victim,” said Hearne.

“Nelson had barely returned from his brother's funeral.”

After William was killed, the reserve reportedly used a helicopter and trackers to find the bull and kill it. They searched for a week without any luck.

According to the newspaper, following Nelson's death, the reserve redoubled its efforts to kill the bull. They eventually found it around 11am on Tuesday and the elephant was killed from the helicopter. - Sapa
