Almost R1-million worth of perlemoen recovered in Port Elizabeth
2018-05-19 10:14

Derrick Spies, Correspondent

Perlemoen with an estimated value of almost R1-million was recovered by members of the Port Elizabeth's K9 unit on Friday.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said police had been alerted to a suspicious bakkie that was travelling along Marine Drive in Summerstrand.

"The vehicle was stopped by police and on searching it, nothing suspicious or illegal could be found inside," she said.

Naidu said the driver and the vehicle had been allowed to leave. She said afterwards K9 members had combed the area where the bakkie had been stopped and had discovered 15 bags full of perlemoen in the nearby bushes.

She said the police recovered a total of 2 500 units of perlemoen, weighing roughly 625kgs, with an estimated value of R937 500.

Naidu said no arrests had been made and the confiscated perlemoen was handed over to the department of Agriculture, Forestry and Sea Fisheries.

Police seize abalone worth R5m after high-speed chase near Gordon's Bay
2018-06-13 15:44

Sesona Ngqakamba

Western Cape police seized abalone worth R5m near Gordon’s Bay on Wednesday morning.

This followed a tip-off received from the Grabouw SAPS that a white Toyota Verso was transporting the abalone to Gordon’s Bay.

The vehicle was spotted on the R44. When the driver noticed the police, he made a U-turn and tried to escape. A high-speed chase ensued, before the driver abandoned the car and fled on foot.

Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana said the vehicle was searched and 8 330 shelled abalone were discovered.

No arrests have yet been made, as the police continue to search for the suspect.

Perlemoen poaching syndicate back in court
2018-07-25 05:11

Alex Mitchley

Nineteen suspected members of a massive perlemoen poaching syndicate who were arrested in March are expected back in the dock at the Cape Town Regional Court on Wednesday.

Facing charges of corruption and racketeering, the 19 suspects, nine of whom are marine inspectors from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, might know on Wednesday if their case is being transferred to the Western Cape High Court.

The alleged syndicate is believed to have operated in Gansbaai, Hermanus, Hawston, Bredasdorp, Stanford, Pearly Beach and Kuilsriver.

It is alleged that the department officials sold back confiscated perlemoen to buyers who were also taken into custody on suspicion of being part of the syndicate.

The officials also allegedly escorted illegal consignments of perlemoen.

During their last court appearance in June, several members of the suspected smuggling syndicate were granted bail.
