148. African Fish Eagle Haliaeetus vocifer

Identification
Distinctive plumage with a chestnut body, black wings, and a pure white head, neck, breast, and tail. The face is yellow and featherless and the beak is yellow with a black tip. The feet are yellowish in color and have spiky growths on the bottom that help to grip prey, called spiricules.
Juvenile: Brown body, with a blotchy white head and a black eyeline. They gradually mature over 3-4 years, and the dark streaks that form on the breast are the last of the juvenile plumage to disappear.

160. African Goshawk Accipiter tachiro

Identification
A fairly large accipiter, although male much smaller than female, and more brightly coloured in ad plumage. Larger than Little Sparrowhawk, with dark rump; upper tail usually lacks white spots (but ad male may show two faint spots)

189. Crested Francolin Dendroperdix sephaena

Identification
33 cm; sexes similar. Unmistakable bantam-like build and broad white eye-stripe make it easy to identify. Has habit of holding its tail cocked. Plumage on back of female lightly barred.
Juvenile: Resembles ad but paler above.

196. Natal Spurfowl (Formerly known as Natal Francolin) Pternistis natalensis

Identification
30-38 cm, males larger than females. Overall brown, patterned with cream and black. Bill red with yellow base, and legs and feet orange. This is the only spurfowl in its range without bare facial skin.

199. Swainson's Spurfowl Pternistis swainsonii

Identification
38 cm. Distinguished from other spurfowl by the combination of red face, red throat, black upper bill and black legs. Male and female have similar plumage but the male can be distinguished by having long leg spurs.
Juvenile: A dowdier version of the adult.

Identification
56 cm; sexes alike, male larger than female. Bony casque on head, red facial skin and blue upper neck.
Juvenile: Browner body with reduced helmet; upper neck and throat feathered.
