On our last trip to the USA in May/June 2004 , we hired a motor/home camper , travelled from Seattle , to Vancouver Canada , through British Columbia to Dawson Creek at Mile 1 of the Alaska Highway , and we drove that highway more than 2000 miles of it , sometimes staying over in campsites , with full hook-up facilities , and sometimes , because the season was not fully open yet , we boon-docked in convenient spots next to the road .
Can be somewhat scary to hear a brown-bear ( grisly ) sniffing and snorting a few meters from your head on the other side of a thin aluminium panel .....real scary

...You must try Rooiputs then behind canvas , not strong aluminium, as a big Kalahari Lion cleans your braai 2 metres from you at 2am ..or appears at the wash up sink (50 metres from our tent) to drink the water off run while Jane is washing clothes mere metres away ..Those Free State Girls have STRONG Heartsokie wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2019 8:30 pm On our last trip to the USA in May/June 2004 , we hired a motor/home camper , travelled from Seattle , to Vancouver Canada , through British Columbia to Dawson Creek at Mile 1 of the Alaska Highway , and we drove that highway more than 2000 miles of it , sometimes staying over in campsites , with full hook-up facilities , and sometimes , because the season was not fully open yet , we boon-docked in convenient spots next to the road .

Re: To camp or not to camp
During our trip to KTP a couple years ago , our friend who worked for SP at the time , invited us to stay a couple of nights with them in the staff-camp at Kij Kij , and that was a fantastic experience . It has a " hok " , which is a small wire mesh enclosure with camp-beds ( uncomfortable as hell ) . Toilet outside and waterhole 20 meters away .
While we were busy with our braai , my friend's wife suddenly shouted : " Hok toe " , and everybody just dropped everything and scrambled into the hok , while a leopard casually strolled past us to go and have a drink at the waterhole .
The next evening , a couple of lions also came to visit , just as we were preparing to go to bed

Following on again on this thread , I happened to drive past local manufacturers of 4 x 4 trailers and caravans , and briefly stopped in " just lookin' "
Very interesting one here for you Peter , is their Sundowner II Sleeper , 4 x 4 Off-road caravan .
Some of its features are described as :
Sleeps 2 comfortably .
Spacious interior living space.
Large easily accessible kitchen equipped for up to 4 persons .
Easy set-up bush-fan canopy .
You can read all about it here :https://bushwakka.co.za/wp-content/uplo ... ressed.pdf.
It will only set you back a cool R310 000 , and there are a lot of optional extras , which will probably set you back another R25 000 /R30 000 or so.
Oh , and they do have a couple of old , almost un-used trailer -such as a 2012 model Bushwakka wakka wakka , at a give-away price of only R170 K.
Hmmm...... this is not an April Fools joke

Re: To camp or not to camp
The only roughing is the setting up and taking down, with some of the equipment camping can be more comfortable than the huts and chalets that haven't been maintained.

I tend to agree with you, Robert If it wasn't for the lack of a private en suite bathroom.....
