MBOMBELA – The head training ranger (23) of Sabi Sabi was trampled by an elephant cow this morning.

He was airlifted to Mediclinic Nelspruit with a helicopter of Mpumalanga Emergency Medical Services where he is currently receiving treatment.

According to Mr Rod Wynham, managing director of Sabi Sabi, the ranger was out on an early morning walk with other trainee rangers when the incident occurred at about 09:00.

“They came across an elephant cow which charged them. The head training ranger was very brave and did his utmost best to keep the animal away from the trainees. He was severely injured during the incident. Unfortunately, the elephant had to be shot and killed,” Wynham said.

“The head training ranger is highly trained and experienced. I want to commend his bravery,” he added. He wouldn’t disclose his particulars until knowing the full extent of his injuries.

EISH - I have a son in the guiding industry and he could no more have been a head ranger at the age of 23 than fly to the moon. With respect to this young man this is an industry that is crying out for control and a massive upgrade! Hope he recovers soon!
